"Does my cat need a passport?" It is one of the first questions before any trip. The short answer: in Morocco, a pet passport is a booklet, but it is not what gets your pet across the border. Here is why.
Vaccination booklet, international passport, EU passport
- The vaccination booklet: issued by your vet in Morocco, it records the pet's identity, microchip number and vaccine history (rabies, DHPPiL for dogs, feline panleukopenia/cat flu for cats).
- The "international passport": many Moroccan vets use a passport-style booklet. It has the same value as the booklet: a health record, not a travel document.
- The EU pet passport: it can only be issued by a vet based in the European Union. A pet living in Morocco cannot get one before arriving in Europe.
The documents that really matter for travel
- The ISO microchip, readable and recorded on every document.
- A valid rabies vaccination certificate.
- The rabies titer result if the destination requires it (EU, UK…).
- The ONSSA-endorsed health certificate: your pet's real travel document.
The booklet proves the history; the ONSSA certificate authorises the trip. You need both.
What to check in the booklet before leaving
- The microchip number is recorded, with the implant date.
- The rabies vaccine date is after the microchip date.
- Each vaccine has its batch sticker, the vet's signature and stamp.
- Boosters are up to date, with no gap.
Once in Europe
A European vet can issue an EU passport based on the booklet and the entry certificate. It will make every later trip within the EU easier.
