Relocating to Morocco, or coming back with your pet after time abroad? Morocco welcomes dogs and cats without quarantine, provided the health file is compliant on arrival. Here is how it works.
Can I travel to Morocco with my dog?
Yes. Pet dogs and cats can enter Morocco if they are microchipped, vaccinated against rabies and travel with an official health certificate from the departure country. Compliant pets are not quarantined.
A health certificate specific to each origin country
ONSSA (Morocco's National Food Safety Office) publishes health certificate models agreed country by country for importing dogs and cats: European Union, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, the UK, the USA, the UAE, New Zealand, South Africa, Tunisia, Russia, plus a model for other third countries. The vet in the departure country must complete the model for your country and have it endorsed by the official veterinary authority (for example APHIS in the USA or APHA in the UK).
The basic conditions
- ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccine.
- Valid rabies vaccination, given early enough before departure (the minimum delay is stated on your country's certificate).
- Clinical exam by the vet in the days before departure, recorded on the certificate.
- Core vaccines recommended (DHPP for dogs, FVRCP for cats) and parasite treatment.
Banned dog breeds
Moroccan law 56-12 on preventing dangers from dogs strictly regulates so-called dangerous dogs, and ONSSA has issued a public notice on their import. Pit bull-type dogs and other breeds classed as dangerous should not be imported: check your dog's breed before planning the move.
On arrival: ONSSA check and customs clearance
Pets enter through a border inspection post, where ONSSA officers check the documents, the identity (microchip scan) and the animal's condition. A non-compliant pet can be refused entry. For a pet arriving as cargo, the shipment must then be cleared at the cargo terminal: we handle this and deliver the pet to your home anywhere in Morocco. See our pet import to Morocco service.
Does Royal Air Maroc allow pets?
Yes: in the cabin up to 8 kg including the carrier (bag of max. 55 × 40 × 20 cm), in the hold up to 70 kg including the crate, and as cargo beyond that. The pet must be booked when you buy your ticket.
Plan for the way back
If you may one day return to Europe with your pet, get a rabies titer test before leaving the EU: Morocco is a "non-listed" country, so this test (and its 3-month wait) will be required on the way back. For the USA, the CDC classes Morocco as high-risk for dog rabies: prepare the US paperwork before you leave.
Frequently asked questions
Will my pet be quarantined in Morocco?
No, as long as it is microchipped, vaccinated and travels with the official health certificate for its origin country.
Where do I find the right health certificate?
On the ONSSA website, under live animal imports, dogs and cats: there is a model for each country or group of countries. We send you the right one.
Is a titer test needed to enter Morocco?
It is not required in most cases, but it is strongly recommended if you plan to go back to the EU or the UK.
