To the United States
Dog entry into the US is governed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Requirements have changed recently and generally include: a microchip, a minimum age, an import form to complete online, and an animal that appears healthy on arrival. Cats face lighter rules but are still screened.
Important: CDC rules for dogs are updated regularly. Always check the version in force at the time of your trip.
To Canada
Canada, through the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency), mainly requires a valid rabies vaccination certificate for dogs and cats over three months old, plus a health certificate. Requirements can vary by province and point of entry.
Choosing the airline
- Not all airlines accept animals in the hold on long-haul routes: the booking must be confirmed in advance.
- Favour routes with as few connections as possible to reduce stress and handling.
- Watch for seasonal (heat) embargoes and brachycephalic breeds, which are often refused.
The IATA crate, your ally
On an 8-to-12-hour flight, the travel crate must be sturdy, properly ventilated and large enough. It is fitted with water bowls accessible from the outside and an absorbent mat.
