Cats travel too! Whether it's a relocation or an extended stay, exporting a cat from Morocco means meeting precise health formalities. They vary by destination, but a common foundation applies almost everywhere.
The common foundation
- Identification: ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before any vaccination.
- Rabies vaccination: up to date, given after the microchip and respecting the validity period (21 days after the first vaccination).
- General good health: confirmed by a veterinarian shortly before departure.
The ONSSA health certificate
The centrepiece of any export file, the health certificate is issued under ONSSA's supervision. It is drawn up by an authorised veterinarian in a short window before the flight (often 24–48 h). It certifies the animal's identity, valid vaccines and the absence of any sign of disease.
Tip: the ONSSA certificate has limited validity. Schedule it as close as possible to the departure date so it is still valid on arrival.
Destination-specific requirements
European Union
As with dogs, because Morocco is a non-listed third country, a rabies antibody titration test (≥ 0.5 IU/ml) is required, followed by a 3-month waiting period.
North America, the Gulf, elsewhere
Requirements differ: some countries ask for antiparasitic treatments, others for specific forms. Always confirm current rules with the destination country's veterinary authority.
The crate and your cat's comfort
Choose an IATA-approved travel crate in which the cat can stand, turn around and lie down. Get it used to the crate several weeks in advance to reduce travel stress.
